Video FAQ

What file formats can I upload?

Any Flash, Quicktime, or Windows Media file format.

What size file can I upload?

Up to 200MB, however for best encoding results a more efficient file size is recommended (+-50MB).

How is video displayed on Reel Exchange?

Files are automatically transcoded from their original file format to Flash 9 (VP6) via the On2 FlixEngine encoder; bitrate is 448 kbps, keyframes set to every third frame, and conversion being completed in Best Quality mode using dual-pass. This profile allows files to begin playing within a few seconds for most viewers.

Are there other encoding options?

We are considering adding user-selectable options to accommodate variations in temporal resolution, contrast, resolution, aspect ratio, etc. We are also testing higher bitrate options.

How are thumbnails generated?

Thumbnails are automatically generated during the encoding process; we will soon add a user override to allow you to upload a thumbnail to display with your profile.

What can I expect from the upload proccess?

Most files will upload within 5-15 minutes, depending on file size. While the file is uploading do not use the back button or close your browser. When the file is uploaded, your screen will resolve to a status screen. This screen will indicate whether the file is pending (being queued in the transcoding server), transcoding, OK (completed transcode) or errored. Once you finish uploading a video, you do not have to wait until it is transcoded to start another upload. After you have uploaded your video, click Back to Profile. This will save the upload to your profile. At this point you may Publish your profile (upper right hand corner), add another video, or continue to make changes to your profile. Until your video has successfully transcoded, you may see a temporary thumbnail of your video in the Profile page. It should switch to a real thumbnail of your video upon successful transcode. You may view your profile at any time by clicking View How Others See My Profile; however uploads or changes are not visible to the public until you Publish your profile.

Why did I get an error messageduring video upload?

You may need to fill in a required field (bold). You may have a non-ASCII standard character in the file name or description (for example smart quotes or an &). You may have uploaded an unsupported file format or the file may be too big.

Why can't I Publish?

Normally, all errors will display at the top of your screen. Click on the links within the error messages to help solve the problem. Some common errors include: You may not have validated your email adddress (you must click on the email message you received when you registered to validate your email). You may not have successfully uploaded a video or your video may not yet have completed transcoding.

What is my Primary reel?

When you upload more than one video to your Profile you choose which video displays as the large thumbnail on your Profile page. If you do not choose which video to be Primary, your most recent video will be Primary. In addition, your Primary reel will display in channels that you have not programed (see below). These include the disciplines that you can choose on Video Upload, but also all other channels on the site (i.e., formats, media, software, etc).

Why would I Program My Videos?

If you have uploaded multiple videos and you have indicated that you work in more than one discipline (editor, visual effects artist, producer, etc.), this interface allows you to select which of your videos to display on the corresponding channels. For example you may choose to display your Feature Film reel on the Directors channel and your Commercials reel on the Editors and Visual Effects channels. Viewers will still see all your videos on your Profile page and on your Video Player page. Conversely, you can leave "Use Defaults" checked or program multiple videos to one channel/discipline and each video will rotate its display on the channel pages upon page refresh.

What happens if I don't Program My Videos (i.e. keep the "Use Defaults" checked?

If you have uploaded multiple videos they will rotate on the channel pages upon page refresh. Viewers will still see all your videos on your Profile page and on your Video Player page.
